'No Guns!' is a project addressing the issues of youth gun and knife related street crime worldwide.

After the tragic and untimely death of his mother who was killed in a fatal stabbing by an 18 year old child, back in 1989,

Soul Sohpal wanted to invest his experience from the point of view of being a victim of violent crime.

So, acclaimed producer Soul Sohpal has released a Hip Hop Single called 'No Guns!' featuring the talented TruFam Records Ltd & K.C.

The hope is to raise money to donate to the very organisations that support victims through the pains of violent crime.

These organisations do some of the most wonderful works in their communities - worldwide.

Although, keep in mind that the No Guns! Project is not just about raising money, selling a single or donating to worthy causes,

'its about raising our level of thinking and understanding socially'

Solstice the Album

Solstice the Album reviewed by Simon Harper – The Birmingham Post UK

Soul and Mind Productions – Solstice the Album

(Soul and Mind Productions)

Printed Monday 17th September 2007 – The Birmingham Post UK

Emerging from Wolverhampton, Soul Sohpal's Enlightenment EP – issued earlier this year – displayed a maturity and assuredness usually alien to those with so few releases under their belt.

Now returning with a full-length album, Sohpal's robust cocktail of hip hop, Middle Eastern rhythms and subtly layered instrumentation feels slicker and more developed than the previous outing.

As with that EP, what's most noticeable is how stately this debut long-player sounds, complete with twinkling keys and sweeping string samples lending an elegant sheen to its charms.

Being most closely reminiscent of Natacha Atlas, Talvin Singh and Massive Attack, its all fluid beats and gentle guitar textures, with Tabla propelling the songs into the stratosphere

Whether it's the whispered vocal of Deeply Beautiful or the assorted rousing and recognisable speeches featured on Indefinable Mysterious Energy, there seems to be an attempt to essay both the power and rhythm of words.

Solstice flows musically and lyrically, with funk at its core. The rolling, insistent bassline and string flourishes often recall the work of French maestro Jean Claude Vannier, arranger for Serge Gainsbourg, especially on Poem.

More of that 1970s funk sound can be heard on Manufactured Fear, which is a resoundingly laidback motif featuring lithe guitar and the leanest of rhythms, making dancing almost impossible to resist and being a suitable accompaniment to the last throes of summer.

Overall, Solstice is a confident record and with its quietly expressive elements it's an album which will appeal to those who prefer mood-making music. A recommended listen 4 stars
