Ayurveda is the oldest & most complete medicinal system known to man. It is known as a Wholistic or Holistic system because it treats a human being as a complex whole. Ayurveda strives for harmony between a human being and the entire environment around him.
Ayurveda functions foremost to prevent disease & to promote well-being; to avoid the need for cure.
The aim of Ayurveda is to maintain a perfect state of Swastha (Health):
“To protect the health of the healthy person
To get rid of the disease of the unhealthy person.”
[CS.Sa.1/35]
Ayurveda utilises natural herbs & minerals, correct nutrition, purification &, most importantly, positive ways of living. If we live & think in harmony with our selves, Nature & the Universe it is easy to understand that we need to live with balance. It is best to live a Middle Path & not a life of extremities so as not to cause an imbalance, or dis-ease, in our selves or our environment.
Historically evolved from the Vedas, India's ancient books of wisdom, Ayurveda combines physical, psychological & spiritual therapies in its approach to Health as it does in its approach to Life. The early Ayurvedic philosophers perceived the micro cosmos of life as a trinity of mind, consciousness and body.[1]
This system treats not just the ailment of the Body, but the whole person, thus including both the Soul & Mind in treatment. Ayurveda emphasises the need for balance between these 3 entities & so recommends Yoga (Uniting with the Supreme Soul) & Meditation (Uniting with Reality) as an integral part of Ayurvedic treatment.
This Wholistic, or Holistic, outlook is as relevant to the modern world as it was to the ancient world, when Ayurveda first became part of India's collective consciousness. It is an ancient Science that has survived primarily intact until the modern day, due to its irresistable natures of timeless relevance & inherent adaptibility.
"Ayurveda is a healthcare both sensitive & sublime,
that is still alive & well itself."
[Robert E. Svoboda]

3 Cosmic Life Forces
The Ayurvedic system distinguishes 3 Primary forces in existance in the Universe: Prana (Life), Jyoti (Light) & Prema (Love). They relate to the 3 major elements of Air, Fire & Water which continuously interact & combine as part of their inherent nature. In Earth's atmosphere these 3 elements manifest as Wind, Sun & Rain, which continue to interact & so creates the development of life.

3 Doshas (Bio-energies)
Ayurveda recognises 3 primary Life forces in the human body called Doshas (Bio-Energies), which correspond to the 3 elements. At conception these Tri Doshas (3 Bio-Energies) physically manifest from the subtle energies of the Universe.
Each of us are made up of all 3 Doshas in unique quanities, which is known as our
(Natural Constitution). This ancient Ayurvedic term is equivalent to the modern term (Deoxychloride Neucleaic Acid).

A Universal Healing Art
Ayurveda is a lot more than a medical system; it is a Universal Healing Art. Ayurveda's message of Natural medicines & Holistic health has helped to spread Vedic knowledge to the Western hemisphere, reminding us all to become guardians of Life; our own & each others. Amazingly, Ayurveda a medium to healing ourselves. It is also an Karmic opportunity; an understanding which offers us a chance to help human civilisation heal itself.
